5EXCELLENT unit  Jul 07, 2010

No words to say how great it is a great system have for a few years love it

51080p pass through not supported, nagging issue with "mode not supported" - otherwise great value and performance  May 16, 2010
Well, I'm not going to cover what the other reviews have, we all know it has: great features for the price, Onkyo quality and support, easy to use and configure so on and so on.

Now I do beg to differ the expertise of those who claim they are hooking up their Xbox 360, PS3 for Blu Ray, or any device that supports 1080p. If you are going through your Onkyo 6100 you are down scaling your video to 1080i because much to my dismay I found out that it WILL NOT UPSCALE or PASS THROUGH 1080P, which is what makes a blu ray movie superior to what you can get from the local HD cable or sat TV provider which is broadcast in 1080i.

So when I purchased my Xbox Elite and it would not work hooked up through the Onkyo I figured out it would not display video because my Onkyo HDMI ports were set to the default "auto detect" setting and the Xbox Elite uses a default auto config setting of 1080p. So in order to get it to work, I had to downscale it to 1080i in my Xbox video settings and lose the quality I just purchased.

Or you can do what I did for my final solution and connect it your TV at 1080p via HDMI and then use the optical sound out from your TV to the Onkyo optical input. So with either config I' losing either sound or video quality and this very much disappointed me because that was a major reason I shelled out for this model. Onkyo support could not help me figure out the above problem with the Xbox, I had to figure it out myself.

Also, I had had the dreaded "mode not supported" error on my TV when I use the cable/sat HDMI port. Two times now in the past 5 months and the last time it occured the Onkyo settings menu would not display without the above error. If I recycled the power several times it would finally complete the handshake the cable video would display, but never the support menu. VERY ANNOYING.

So I figured this out on my own as well, to fix it a simple factory reset will do the trick. Hold down the VCR button and hold power at the same time when it's turned on it will reset, and tell you it did so on the menu. This fixed the above problem both times it occurred. Onkyo support did tell me how to reset it and were helpful minus the above complaint about 1080p on my Xbox.

Good luck, other than the complaints above, it's been a very good purchase and I have no regrets.

5easy install  Jan 27, 2010
We had no problem installing out Onkyo receiver and Speaker package. The sound is awesome. We didn't use 2 of the speakers because of the size of the room, but it is amazing to find out how much you miss without a sound system. I would recommend this Onkyo system for anyone who enjoys good sound.

5This is like magic in my living room  Jan 04, 2010
Let me tell you a little about me so you can figure out whether or not you think you would by this product. I love movies, am not rich (yet), and have a PS2, PS3, Wii, and a 46" SONY BRAVIA 1080p TV. For the longest time I wanted a surround sound system so that I could enjoy my movies with the beautiful sound they were capable of. I agonized whether I should go for the 7.1 instead of the 5.1 Onkyo system. My ultimate reasoning came down to this, if a blu-ray movie can output to 7.1 channels why get a system that eventually will miss those two other channels which will likely be used as newer movies come out. Now what stopped me from going to the more expensive 7.1 Onkyo system was thinking, 'well if I already am spending more money to get those two channels do I really need to pay even more for something that I will surely like (THX certification) and want, but will cutting deeply into my funds because of it.' And the answer was that I didn't need to spend more because I had already gone the financial distance to get to this level.

Now if you have decided that this is the price range and this is what you want then you will definitely get a good product. I hooked up my PS3 to this system to watch blu-rays and play games. The movies were awesome. Especially Pan's Labyrinth, which is one of the few blu-rays that I am aware of that boasts the full 7.1 channels. The explosions in the movie were so loud and real I could hear the people above my apartment scrambling and freaking out, which eventually lead to a complaint to lower the volume. The games I have played with the system are Resistance 2, MGS4 which were both awesome to hear bad guys walking around about to kill you. I also am playing Silent Hill:Shattered memories on the Wii, which is amazing and an extreme amount of tension when you can hear a freaky creature about to attack you that you have to physically (with wii controller motion) push off.

My only complaint about the system is that the upscaling kind of sucked. I was hoping that this system would be able to upscale my PS2 games to 1080i so that I wouldn't have to buy component cables but it a sucky job of it. That however may be a matter of the signal out that came from the PS2. I didn't fully research wether the Onkyo system could actually do what I wanted it to do for the PS2 so I don't blame the system entirely. This is more of a beware for those of you who have a just a DVD player that expect the image quality to improve or something. I ended up buying the component cables and fed it to the Onkyo receiver and the picture was fine.

I have actually owned this product this product for a little less than a year now but have just gotten around to reviewing it. I highly recommend this product and don't have any regrets. However, one thing to be aware of is that you will likely have to buy speaker stands if you don't want to drill holes in your wall (i.e. add another ~$200 for full setup).

5I can do it all with this.  Oct 29, 2009
After researching and researching and researching I finally picked the Onkyo HT-S6100 7.1 surround sound speaker package. I love it. I currently have my PS3, Ipod, HDTV, and my HD cable box all hooked up to it!! It's all hooked up in HD and it looks and sounds great with all of them. I had a party at my apartment and was playing my Ipod thru it and it BUMPS. It's really easy to set up (all wires are color coded) and it is really easy to use. Granted I am pretty technically savvy, but even if you weren't I don't the set up and use being that hard. I don't see any cons with this product, and I got a refurbished one too and it was in perfect condition.
