great product bad company Sep 02, 2010 The earbuds work fine, if you dont mind having only 12 inches if wire to work with. the extension cable didnt work out of the box and Shure wouldnt send me one. Good luck on ever getting a response from Source Media Group. Amazon did the only thing they could do and gave me a return/refund. for the lack of Shure shipping me a 1$ cable they lost a 160$ sale and a customer for life
Not Perfect, But Very Good Aug 24, 2010 I bought these as an upgrade from the Shure SE-110 (which I already love). I chose to stick with Shure because of past experiences with them.
Sound quality:
The detail in these earphones is amazing. The highs are incredibly clear. While I did expect more bass from these, the lows are very clean and tight. The dual drivers make it so that you can crank up your music and not worry about distortion.
Sound isolation:
The sound isolation is very good. I keep getting surprised by coworkers who approach my desk, flight attendants, and pretty much anybody who is not in my direct field of view because of the amount of sound that is blocked. And thats at a quiet listening level.
Fit:
The fit is very good. I'll admit that my first in-ear earphones were uncomfortable at first, but then I got used to them and haven't been bothered. These ones come with different tips for every shape and size of ear, so fit shouldn't be an issue for most. These are actually smaller than the pair of Shure SE-110s that that replace.
Overall:
I would recommend these earphones for somebody who is looking for very clear sound or would like to block out background noise.
Very Uncomfortable Jul 17, 2010 After using these headphones for 1-2 hours my right ear was experiencing some very bad pain. Apparently I must have very small ears, because even the smallest sleeve completely cut off circulation when in use. On the bright side, they sounded fantastic, but if you have small ears, these aren't gonna work for you.
You can tell how big they are from the minute you open them, much larger than other earphones in the same quality market. They are also very cumbersome to wear since due to their size and the special way you have to insert them in the ears every time.
I've since been using a pair of q-jays, and they're actually comfortable so I can use them. As far as sound quality goes, it's probably a toss up between the Shure 420's and the q-jays. The q-jays are ~$30 cheaper, immensely smaller, and come with sleeves that have a larger range of sizes. They also have the dual tweeter design, with a smaller housing, so there's less leakage of air in the housing.

One important consideration... Jul 14, 2010 I can't argue with the sound quality. Much has been written on this, so I won't add any more comments on how good the phones sound. My one major criticism, however, is with the sound isolation -- it actually works too well! Depending on how you are going to listen to your music, these sound-isolating headphones may not be the best choice for you. What I'm talking about is internal body noise.
With the earpieces seated correctly, the sound isolation is so complete that I can hear the thump-thump-thumping of my feet as I walk down the street. It's like when you jump out of a pool and there is water in your ears so everything sounds muted, but you can hear your own heartbeat. When you walk with these earphones in, you can hear sounds not necessarily from outside your body but actually transmitted THROUGH your body to your eardrum. The contact noise of my feet hitting the ground (and I'm not overweight) is so distracting and overpowering that I CANNOT use these headphones while walking to work. Sitting in a subway, bus, and even airplane: yes, these things sound glorious! But I wish I had known that I'd have to switch back to my regular earbuds for any type of walking. And as for any kind of jogging or treadmill use -- forget it! You'll have a headache pulsing in sync with your stride in no time. Although, a few other reviewers say these phones were great for the gym, so perhaps my body just transmits foot noise more than others'. Just something to consider.
Long-time Shure User, Upgrade Necessary? Jun 28, 2010 When I first put in these headphones I was very pleased; the sound quality is noticeably better than my 120s. However, for the price difference, I don't know that I would choose this set. That being said, I don't know which other brand I would try, but I am hesitant to recommend these to people, especially those who don't truly understand how to wear these or evaluate the quality of headphones. One concern that I have is that they will not last. My first pair of Shures was a 320 (I believe) which lasted a year, then the 120s which lasted a year, and then these. I fear that these will only have a one-year life span as well. I listen to music with them about 3 hours a day though, so the use is very heavy. I maintain them well (keep them stored in the case when not in use) but eventually one ear shorted out on my last two pairs.
Here's to hoping that won't happen to this pair, but that is my only concern. Another note is that these are the most comfortable Shures I've owned.
