4Decent  Sep 04, 2009
Sound: 7/10. I was expecting a little more bass, but overall it's pretty good. Unless you are truely fastidious audiophile, this will do the job.
Comfortable: 7/10. Not as soft as the EX50 ones. It hurts a little after prolonged wearing.
Style: 9/10. Pretty good to look at.
Extra: comes with 3 sets of earbuds of different size.

Overall: 7/10. For a pair under 50 bucks, the sound is well worth it.

2Great package, serious flaws.  Jun 25, 2009
These Sonys are not a true in-ear or canal phone, they are like regular ipod earbuds with a little silicone horn. They are packaged meticulously, with a very nice case and cord-keeper included. The comfort is fantastic, you can barely feel them when you're wearing them. They coordinate perfectly with the 120 GB ipod Classic in silver.

The sound is where things get a little complicated. The best thing the Sonys have going for them is clear, detailed midrange and vocals. The silicone earpieces, while comfortable, do not provide enough isolation for deep bass response. One some bass-heavy music there is audible distortion in low frequencies, even with the ipod's volume set at less than 50%. On other music, such as mainstream rock and pop, there simply is no bass. Changing earpiece covers may help for some listeners, however I noticed no difference in sound quality, only obtrusiveness in the ear.

I have owned Sony's Fontopia earbuds in the past, and now that a set can be had for under $20, I would rate them a much better deal. Their sound is almost as detailed, with better bass and less low-frequency distortion, plus you can shove 'em in your ear a little farther to get better isolation and volume.

5Best in class  Mar 23, 2009
I have a few MP3 Players including 2 i-Pods a Zune and a Sony S series. I've been searching for the best sounding ear-buds to compliment my investment in the MP3 players and the Sony MDR-EX85LP's are it. I ended up with a few sets that aren't worth mentioning, but some people have compared these with the Sennheiser CX500's. I have two sets of Sennheiser CX500s, they're nice but do not have the depth or richness of these inexpensive ear-buds. In fact I played a few songs over and over on the same player and in every case the Sony's reproduced a better over sound and bottom end than the Sennheiser CX500's. Being a fan of Sennheiser headphones I actually bought another set after the test results ending up with the same results.

Sound is subjective and I might love the sound of a certain speaker or headset and someone else might not like it as well. so it is hard to be absolute, but I use Sennheiser 280 Pros for my home recording studio and love em, but for my MP3 players the Sony EX85LP's compared to the Sennheiser CX500's are a much better sounding ear-bud.

4Great mid-level earbuds  Mar 13, 2009
I've purchased several varieties of earbuds and Sony earbuds in general, and these in particular, are the best I've found in the under $50 range. I doubt I could improve on the sound performance with making the jump to the $100 range. All ranges are excellent, and the bass is especially powerful. If you take your music seriously but aren't quite ready for studio level earbuds, I think these are a great choice for you.

4really uncomfortable for those with small ears  Feb 13, 2009
...and i'm talking really small ears. i have the smallest adult ears i know, so these are very uncomfortable for me. i have to shove them hard into my ear canals and if i have to take them off and on a lot, my ear canals start to hurt. i don't think they're supposed to be as tight fitting as they are.
other than that, i think the sound quality is great. the plus side to very snug fitting earbuds, it really keeps out all the outside noise.
